Team India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer produced a moment of brilliance and bravery in the field during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 25. The 30-year-old took a stunning catch to dismiss wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey, but unfortunately injured himself in the process, forcing him to walk off the field for treatment.

Earlier in the match, India’s stand-in skipper Shubman Gill lost the toss for the third straight time, as Mitchell Marsh opted to bat first. Australia retained most of their winning combination from the previous games, while India made two changes — Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna returned to the XI, replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy and Arshdeep Singh.

Openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh gave Australia a flying start, adding 50 runs inside the first eight overs. However, Mohammed Siraj broke the partnership by dismissing Head for 29 in the 10th over. Soon after, Axar Patel struck in his second over, sending Marsh back for a fluent 41 that included five fours and a six.

The middle order, led by Matthew Short and Matt Renshaw, tried to rebuild with a 36-run stand, but Washington Sundar’s clever variations got the better of Short for 30. The wicket reduced Australia to 124/3, halting their momentum.

As the innings progressed, Carey and Renshaw steadied things with a 59-run partnership before Harshit Rana struck in the 34th over. Carey attempted to play an aggressive lofted shot but mistimed it completely. Shreyas Iyer sprinted from backward point and took a stunning two-handed diving catch, even as the ball threatened to pop out of his grasp. However, the effort left him clutching his left hip in pain, and he had to be assisted off the field after receiving on-ground treatment. Carey’s dismissal for 24 off 37 balls proved crucial for India.

Soon after, Sundar struck again, trapping Renshaw LBW for 56. A review confirmed the ball was hitting leg stump, giving India a vital breakthrough. At the time of writing, Australia were 197/5 after 37 overs, with Cooper Connolly and Mitchell Owen battling to stabilize the innings, while Sundar continued to shine as India’s most impactful bowler.
