AB de Villiers has come out strongly in support of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, hitting back at critics who have questioned the two Indian stalwarts as they approach the twilight of their legendary careers. Both players had a tough start to the Australia tour — Rohit scored just 8 in the opener before rebounding with 73, while Kohli endured two rare ducks — as India slipped to a 2-0 deficit.

However, the duo silenced all doubters in the final ODI, crafting a sublime 168-run unbeaten partnership that led India to a nine-wicket victory. Rohit smashed a commanding 121 off 135 balls*, while Kohli anchored the chase with a composed 74 off 81*, reminding fans why they remain cricketing greats.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former South Africa captain AB de Villiers lashed out at the negativity surrounding senior players, calling it deeply unfair to target cricketers who have dedicated their lives to the game.

“I don’t know what it is about people — or if I can even call them that. Cockroaches climb out of their holes as soon as players near the backend of their careers. Why pour negative energy into players who have given everything for their country and for this beautiful game? This is the time to celebrate them,” AB de Villiers said passionately.

De Villiers, who has shared a long-standing friendship with Kohli from their RCB days, added that while a small section of fans may criticise, the majority still celebrate Rohit and Kohli’s greatness.

“They’ve taken a lot of criticism recently. Everyone seems to be trying to bring them down — for what reason, I can’t understand. Thankfully, the majority of fans still appreciate their incredible careers. It’s the perfect time to celebrate them,” he added.

After their memorable show in Australia, both Rohit and Kohli are expected to return to action in December, when India hosts South Africa for a three-match ODI series, marking their much-awaited return on home soil.
