Indian batter Sai Sudharsan has quietly built an impressive start to his international career, featuring in five matches and scoring 273 runs at an average of 30.33, including two half-centuries. While the numbers may not yet tell the full story, the Tamil Nadu youngster credits his confidence and composure to head coach Gautam Gambhir’s unwavering support and clear communication.

Reflecting on a memorable moment from practice, Sai Sudharsan recalled how Gambhir’s words lifted a weight off his shoulders. “To be honest, the support was impeccable,” he said.

He added, “We were practising at Feroz Shah Kotla ahead of the second Test against the West Indies. I was the last to bat, and GG sir called me over. He told me, ‘Don’t get desperate. You’re here for a reason—you’re one of the best players in the country. Don’t overthink about runs or outcomes. You will play.’ The way he said it gave me so much confidence and freedom.”

“I was trying to be freer and not overthink external factors or expectations. But when you hear that reassurance from your head coach, your mindset changes. Suddenly, you feel a sense of clarity and calmness,” he explained.

The 23-year-old will now turn his attention to the upcoming India A series against South Africa A, a crucial two-match, four-day contest that will serve as preparation for the senior team’s home series against the Proteas later this month.

“India A matches are vital,” Sai Sudharsan said. “We’re fortunate to have this opportunity before the main series. It’s the perfect platform to understand the conditions, build momentum, and prepare mentally for what lies ahead.”

With Gambhir’s guidance and a renewed mindset, Sudharsan seems ready to take the next big step in his cricketing journey.
