Abhishek Nayar has been officially named the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2026 season, succeeding Chandrakant Pandit, who stepped down after IPL 2025. This appointment marks a new chapter for the franchise as they aim to rebuild and return to championship contention.

A long-serving member of the KKR setup, Nayar has played multiple roles over the years — from assistant coach to talent scout — and has been instrumental in developing homegrown stars like Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana. His ability to identify potential and help players rediscover their rhythm has made him one of the most respected figures in India’s coaching circuit.

A former India and domestic cricketer, Nayar’s coaching journey has been marked by his deep cricketing acumen and mentorship. He was a part of KKR’s backroom staff during their third IPL title triumph in 2024, working closely with Gautam Gambhir, who was then the mentor.

Later, Abhishek Nayar joined Gambhir in the Indian team’s coaching setup and contributed to India’s Champions Trophy victory, before returning to the franchise setup. Most recently, he served as head coach of UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League.

Confirming his appointment, KKR CEO Venky Mysore praised Nayar’s long-standing contribution and rapport with the players. “Abhishek has been a vital part of the Knight Riders setup since 2018, shaping our players both on and off the field. His deep understanding of the game and connection with the team have been key to our growth. We’re thrilled to see him lead KKR into its next chapter,” Mysore said.

With the IPL 2026 retention and auction around the corner, Nayar’s appointment comes at a crucial time. KKR, who finished eighth in IPL 2025, will now look to rebuild under his guidance and return to their winning ways.
