There are few better judges of raw cricketing talent than former England captain Nasser Hussain, and once again, he’s been proven right. After Jemimah Rodrigues’ breathtaking 127 not out against Australia in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final, fans on social media rediscovered a seven-year-old post by Hussain on X (formerly Twitter), where he had famously written, “Remember the name.”

The old photo shows a young Jemimah standing beside Hussain, both smiling after a casual net session. Back then, she was a teenager who had just made her debut for India in ODIs and T20Is. Hussain’s caption — predicting she was “going to be a star for India” — now seems almost prophetic, following her record-breaking knock that powered India into the final.

Jemimah’s innings was nothing short of extraordinary. Chasing a mammoth 339-run target, India were under early pressure after Smriti Mandhana’s dismissal. But Jemimah, alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur (89 off 88), stitched a stunning 167-run stand, guiding India to 341/5 in 48.3 overs — the highest successful chase in Women’s ODI history.

Her innings was a perfect blend of patience and power. She punished every loose delivery, kept the scoreboard ticking, and despite being dropped twice on 82 and 106, showed nerves of steel to finish unbeaten. The moment the winning runs were scored, Jemimah collapsed to her knees, overcome with emotion, before embracing her teammates and family in tears.

Her father, Ivan Rodrigues, shared his pride with The Indian Express, saying, “That David vs Goliath story fits perfectly — Jemimah, the little David, stood tall against the mighty Aussies. This was the result of years of dedication and faith.”

With India now set to face South Africa in the World Cup final on Sunday, Ivan added, “I’ve always believed this day would come. But the mission isn’t over yet — one more step remains for the ultimate glory.”
