Former Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami opened up about an emotional promise made by Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana that came true in the most magical way on Sunday night in Navi Mumbai. After India’s heartbreak in the 2022 Women’s World Cup, the two star cricketers had vowed to win the next World Cup for Jhulan — a promise they fulfilled as India lifted their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 title with a 52-run win over South Africa.

During the post-match celebrations, an emotional Harmanpreet called Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami — the two trailblazers of Indian women’s cricket — to the podium to hold the coveted trophy. Both legends were moved to tears.

Recalling the heartfelt moment, Jhulan Goswami told Star Sports, “You know what, before this World Cup, they promised me that they would do it for me. In 2022, we didn’t qualify for the semifinals. After that, Harman and Smriti came to my room at midnight and said, ‘We don’t know if you’ll be there in the next one, but we will win it for you.’ And finally, they did.”

It was a picture-perfect moment when Harmanpreet and Smriti wrapped Jhulan in a warm embrace, whispering, “Didi, yeh aapke liye tha” (“Sister, this was for you”). Jhulan admitted she couldn’t hold back her tears. “Finally, they did it — and that’s why this moment is so emotional,” she said.

India’s triumph in Navi Mumbai wasn’t just a sporting victory; it was a cultural milestone. From Monday morning, women’s cricket in India is no longer just a career choice — it has become a dream and a calling for millions of young girls who aspire to wear the blue jersey.

The title win was built on brilliant performances: Shafali Verma’s 87 and two crucial wickets, along with Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance — a 58-run knock and a five-wicket haul — powered India to an unforgettable victory.

Reflecting on the journey, Jhulan Goswami said on JioStar, “Since 1973, we’ve been waiting for this. We reached two finals but never crossed the line. This team finally brought the cup home. I remember being a ball girl in 1997, watching Belinda Clark’s victory lap — that moment inspired my dream to win this trophy for India. These girls have fulfilled that dream.”

She further emphasized the impact this win will have on the next generation. “This World Cup triumph will inspire countless young athletes across the country. When children see such history being made, they begin to dream. This victory will expand the reach of women’s cricket, open new career paths, and show that dedication and belief can make the impossible possible.”
