Diana Edulji Hails India’s Historic Women’s World Cup Win: “A Red-Letter Day for Cricket”

Former India captain and trailblazer Diana Edulji couldn’t hide her pride as she hailed the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team for creating history by winning their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 title. Calling it “a red-letter day” in Indian cricket, Edulji said the victory at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai was the culmination of decades of dedication and struggle by generations of women cricketers.

India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final on Sunday night, lifting their first-ever ICC trophy in front of a roaring home crowd.

Reflecting on the achievement, Diana Edulji said, “Today is a red-letter day. I’m extremely happy and proud to be a women’s cricketer. The hard work of the last 50 years has finally borne fruit. These girls truly deserve every bit of praise for playing wonderful cricket and performing like true champions.”

The 68-year-old, a central figure in the evolution of women’s cricket in India, spoke with emotion about the team’s hunger and resilience.

“You could see it in their eyes — they were desperate to cross the line this time. Since 2017, we have been waiting for this moment. I remember being a COA member when India lost that final in England by just eight runs. This win makes up for all those heartbreaks,” she added.

Edulji also made special mention of Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh, who became the first Indian players to win both the U-19 and senior Women’s World Cup titles, calling it “a proud moment for Indian cricket.”

Applauding the crowd’s electric energy, she said, “The atmosphere was unbelievable. What better gift could the team give than winning the trophy at home, with 40,000 fans cheering them on? This victory belongs to every supporter of women’s cricket.”
