Star India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved a new personal milestone on Monday as he picked up his maiden first-class wicket, dismissing Deepak Hooda just two runs short of a memorable 250 during the Ranji Trophy 2025 third-round clash between Mumbai and Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Mumbai had posted 254 runs in their first innings, but Rajasthan responded with a commanding performance, declaring at 617/6. The star of the show was Deepak Hooda, who smashed a spectacular 248 off 335 balls, studded with 22 fours and two sixes. Hooda was ably supported by Kartik Sharma, who struck a fluent 139 off 192 deliveries, featuring 13 boundaries and three sixes.

For Hooda, this was the second double century of his first-class career, the first being an unbeaten 293 for Baroda against Punjab back in 2016. Known for his aggressive batting style, Hooda has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket. His explosive run in the 2021–22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 294 runs at an average of 73.5 and a strike rate of 168, paved the way for his India T20I debut in February 2022.

Since then, Hooda has represented India in 21 T20Is, scoring 368 runs at an impressive strike rate of 147.2, including a century against Ireland. He has also featured in 10 ODIs, tallying 153 runs. However, a dip in form since early 2023 saw him lose his national spot, making this Ranji season a crucial one for his comeback hopes.

When Hooda seemed unstoppable, Mumbai skipper Shardul Thakur handed the ball to Jaiswal, who bowled leg-spin. In just his third over, Jaiswal struck gold, dismissing Hooda to claim his first first-class wicket. Rajasthan soon declared with a massive 363-run lead, while Jaiswal ended with tidy figures of 1/9 in 2.3 overs, marking a proud bowling milestone in his otherwise batting-dominated career.
