Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the World Cup-winning Indian women’s cricket team at his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg on Wednesday, celebrating a triumph that has reshaped the landscape of Indian women’s cricket. During the conversation, PM Narendra Modi asked Captain Harmanpreet Kaur why she slipped the match ball into her pocket after the victory.

“Harman, after winning, you kept the ball in your pocket,” he said. Harmanpreet smiled and replied, “I still have it.” When the Prime Minister asked what prompted her to keep it, she said, “No sir, it was God’s plan. It wasn’t certain that the last ball would come to me, but it did. After so many years of hard work, after so much waiting, I wanted to keep it. It’s still in my bag.”

PM Modi also spoke to Amanjot Kaur and recalled Suryakumar Yadav’s iconic catch from the 2024 T20 World Cup final, drawing a parallel to Amanjot’s decisive catch to dismiss Laura Wolvaardt in the World Cup final—one that sealed India’s historic win over South Africa.

Harmanpreet reflected on their earlier meeting with the Prime Minister in 2017, after the narrow defeat to England at Lord’s. “Back then, we came without a trophy,” she said. “This time, it’s a matter of great pride that the trophy we worked so hard for over so many years is finally here with us.”
