Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made a significant move on Friday, November 14, by appointing Tim Southee as their new bowling coach for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The former New Zealand fast bowler, who ended his international career in 2014, steps into the role previously held by Bharat Arun, bringing fresh energy and experience to the three-time champions’ setup.

Southee’s appointment is part of KKR’s broader effort to reshape their support staff ahead of the new season. The 36-year-old joins a revamped coaching group headed by Abhishek Nayar, who recently took over as head coach following Chandrakant Pandit’s departure.
Earlier this week, KKR confirmed Shane Watson as the assistant coach, while Dwayne Bravo will continue in his role as mentor. With this combination of global cricketing expertise, KKR appears determined to build a strong, modern coaching framework. For Southee, the move is more of a homecoming than a fresh start. The Kiwi pacer previously represented KKR during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 IPL seasons.

Expressing his excitement, he said, “KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a talented group of players. I look forward to working with the bowling unit and contributing to the team’s success in IPL 2026.”

KKR CEO Venky Mysore also celebrated the addition, highlighting Southee’s influence and calm leadership. “We are delighted to welcome Tim Southee back to the KKR family, this time in a coaching capacity. His experience and technical understanding will be vital in shaping our bowling group. Tim’s leadership qualities make him an ideal guide for our young bowlers,” he stated.
One of New Zealand’s finest all-format bowlers, Southee brings an illustrious resume — 107 Tests, 161 ODIs, 126 T20Is and over 700 international wickets. His recent stint in the Men’s Hundred with Birmingham Phoenix ensures he remains well-connected to the demands of modern T20 cricket.

With the mini-auction approaching, KKR is also expected to make a key call on their captaincy, with Ajinkya Rahane unlikely to be retained. The retention deadline on November 15 will set the tone for what promises to be a defining season for the franchise.
