In a dramatic finish at the Eden Gardens, South Africa pulled off a historic 30-run victory against India on Day 3 of the first Test, marking their first Test win on Indian soil in 15 years. This gritty performance from the Proteas sets the tone for an explosive series, with the visitors now 1-0 up in the two-match encounter.

South Africa began Day 3 at 93/7, with skipper Temba Bavuma showing remarkable resilience. Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 off 136 balls was the anchor South Africa desperately needed on a crumbling surface. With minimal support from the tail, the Proteas stretched their second innings total to 153, setting India a tricky target of 124.
WATCH – Mohammed Siraj Breaks Stumps In Stunning Dismissal Of Simon Harmer
India’s chase got off to a shaky start. The Eden track, already showing unpredictable bounce and turn, became increasingly tough to bat on. Kunwar Jadeja remained India’s best bowler of the match with figures of 4/50 in the second innings, while Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav provided brilliant support throughout.
However, South Africa’s bowlers, especially Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen, refused to let the hosts settle. Harmer’s exceptional spell of 4/21 rattled India’s middle order, while Jansen (2/15) returned to strike at crucial moments. Washington Sundar’s fighting knock of 31 provided India with a glimmer of hope, but the pressure proved too much as the hosts were bowled out for 93 in 34.5 overs.

This defeat leaves India with questions to answer ahead of the second Test in Guwahati, especially with skipper Shubman Gill’s injury-induced absence. For South Africa, it’s a statement win that breaks a long-standing drought and reinvigorates their red-ball credentials in challenging subcontinental conditions.

Huge win for SA. And keeping all the pitch criticism aside, so happy for Simon Harmer. Has been a personal favourite right from his Warriors days. Top player. #INDvSA

My apologies for getting carried away after the English series. If Indian batsmen lack the skill on these dry-turning tracks, why do you even think of playing on such pitches? You pack the team with allrounders, bat till 8, yet this?

Not quite up there with Travis Head in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad, but that’s an outstanding backpedaling catch under pressure from Temba Bavuma #IndvSA
