Rishabh Pant’s challenging run in the ongoing Test series took another disappointing turn as the stand-in Indian skipper registered his second consecutive low score in the second Test against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Coming into Day 5 with the sole mission of saving the match, Indian fans were left frustrated after Pant fell cheaply at a stage where India desperately needed a solid, composed knock.

Chasing an improbable 549, India were already on the back foot after losing two wickets late on Day 4, stumbling to 27/2 in 15.5 overs. While the pitch hadn’t deteriorated significantly, the Indian batters failed to capitalise on the conditions, raising concerns about their approach in high-pressure situations.
India enjoyed moments of fortune early in the morning session—Sai Sudharsan survived a dismissal because of a no-ball, and South Africa even dropped a straightforward catch of Kuldeep Yadav. However, Simon Harmer, who has been a constant threat throughout the innings, broke the brief resistance by sending back Kuldeep after a gritty but unproductive 5 from 38 deliveries. Dhruv Jurel followed soon after for just 2, putting India in deeper trouble.

Pant arrived at No. 6, expected to bring some intent and stability. But Harmer wasn’t done yet. Tossing one up beautifully, he drew Pant into a defensive push. The extra bounce caught him off guard, the ball kissing the top of the bat and looping straight into the waiting hands of Aiden Markram at slip. Pant departed for 13, leaving India tottering at 58/5 and handing Harmer his third wicket of a brilliant morning spell.
With India entering the final day needing to survive 90 overs to salvage a draw and avoid a rare home series whitewash, the collapse couldn’t have come at a worse time. Harmer’s triple strike ripped through the middle order, giving South Africa complete control as they eyed a historic win on Indian soil.

At the latest update, Ravindra Jadeja and Sai Sudharsan were battling it out with India on 90/5 at Tea. The massive target of 549 has long been out of the equation, leaving only two realistic outcomes on the table—a hard-earned draw or a commanding South African victory.
