South Africa’s dressing room was buzzing on Wednesday afternoon in Guwahati, moments after sealing a historic triumph over India in the second Test. The victory not only marked the Proteas’ first Test series win on Indian soil in 25 years but also extended Temba Bavuma’s impressive unbeaten run as Test captain. With this result, South Africa climbed to the second spot on the World Test Championship Points Table, signalling their resurgence in red-ball cricket.

In contrast, the Indian camp wore a stunned, deflated look. The hosts had just endured a crushing 408-run defeat — their heaviest loss ever in terms of runs — and suffered their second consecutive home series defeat against a team from the SENA group. The magnitude of the collapse left players and fans equally shaken.

At the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, emotions ran high. It was the venue’s first-ever Test match, and the local crowd expected a spirited performance from the home side. Instead, they watched a collective meltdown. Tempers flared as frustrated spectators booed Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, echoing chants of “Gautam Gambhir Haye Haye” across the stands.

Once again, the humiliating defeat has placed Gambhir’s position under intense scrutiny. When asked whether he remained the right man to guide India in the Test format, Gambhir reiterated that the decision rests solely with the BCCI.

“It is up to the BCCI to decide,” Gautam Gambhir stated firmly at the post-match press conference. “Indian cricket is important, I’m not important. I said the same when I became head coach.”

He also reminded critics of his past achievements. “People forget quickly. I led a young team to results in England, and I’m the same coach who delivered the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup,” he added, pushing back against the growing noise surrounding his future.
