India bowling coach Morne Morkel has provided a promising update on Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, offering much-needed relief to Indian fans ahead of a packed 2026 cricket calendar. Speaking two days before the series opener, Morkel revealed that both senior batters are progressing well in their respective recoveries and are already on the road back to competitive cricket.

Gill, who currently leads India in Tests and ODIs, suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa. The injury occurred moments after he attempted a sweep shot off Simon Harmer, leaving him in visible discomfort. After facing only three balls, Gill walked off and was later hospitalised, ruling him out of the second Test. India went on to face a crushing defeat in the series, with South Africa sealing a historic 2-0 sweep— their first Test series win on Indian soil in 25 years.

Morne Morkel reassured that Gill’s condition is improving steadily. “I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he is recovering well. That is pleasing to hear,” he said while addressing the media.

Shreyas Iyer has also begun rehabilitation after suffering one of the most serious injuries of his career. During the third ODI against Australia last month, Iyer sustained a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding after a diving catch resulted in a blunt abdominal impact. He underwent emergency surgery in Sydney and has since been discharged, with recovery progressing positively.

“Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. We are looking forward to welcoming them back. The good thing is they are healthy and have begun preparations for their return,” Morne Morkel added.

With two key batters on the mend, India’s management hopes both will be fit in time for the crucial assignments ahead, including the 2026 home season and global tournaments.
