South African rising star Dewald Brevis continues to make waves in international white-ball cricket, and this time it wasn’t his batting but his spectacular fielding that lit up social media. The youngster—often hailed as the modern-day AB de Villiers fanboy—produced a jaw-dropping catch at backward point, instantly reminding fans of the legendary Jonty Rhodes. Timing his leap to perfection, Brevis plucked a one-handed stunner that left even Virat Kohli stunned at the non-striker’s end.

South Africa entered the ODI series brimming with confidence after a memorable Test victory, while India were eager to bounce back on home soil. With regular skipper Temba Bavuma rested, Aiden Markram took charge of the Proteas.

However, their plans suffered early damage as Indian veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli forged yet another commanding century partnership for the second wicket. Rohit, in sublime touch, even broke Shahid Afridi’s ODI sixes record, smashing his 352nd six earlier in the innings.

But South Africa clawed their way back brilliantly in the middle overs. After Rohit’s dismissal for a fluent 57, Ruturaj Gaikwad walked in to make his much-awaited return to the Indian XI. His recent dominance in the unofficial ODIs against South Africa A had earned him this opportunity following Shreyas Iyer’s injury.

However, Gaikwad struggled to find rhythm on a slightly two-paced Ranchi surface. Attempting to free his arms at a delivery from Ottniel Baartman that stayed low, he slashed hard—only for Brevis to throw himself horizontally and complete one of the best catches of the series. The brilliance of the effort left the crowd roaring and the Indian dressing room in disbelief.

Brevis’ moment of magic shifted the momentum, giving South Africa renewed energy after India’s powerful start. It was a reminder of why fielding remains one of the Proteas’ greatest strengths, passed down through generations—from Rhodes to the sensational Dewald Brevis.
