Shubman Gill continues to remain on the sidelines for the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa as he recovers from a neck injury. In a positive development for Team India, Gill is now expected to begin his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru starting Monday, sparking cautious optimism about his participation in the upcoming five-match T20I series against the same opponents.

However, the team management is in no mood to rush his return. According to a Times of India report, Gill has shown encouraging signs, travelling multiple routes—Kolkata to Guwahati, Guwahati to Mumbai, Mumbai to Chandigarh, and finally Chandigarh to Bengaluru—without any discomfort.

“There are no red flags at the moment… all efforts are aimed at having him back on the park, but it will not be rushed,” a source was quoted as saying.

Shubman Gill had undergone physiotherapy in Mumbai and was advised complete rest after suffering the injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, an incident that led to his brief hospitalisation.

Since then, the India Test and ODI captain has not picked up the bat, though he is expected to resume practice in the coming days. “The moment he is 100% and feels ready for the grind, he will be back with the squad. He is an important all-format player,” the source added.

In Gill’s absence, KL Rahul has taken charge of the ODI side, leading India to a thrilling 17-run victory in the opening match in Ranchi, where Virat Kohli smashed a century and Rohit Sharma added a crucial fifty. The second ODI will be played in Raipur on Wednesday.

India are not only missing Gill but also Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a serious injury sustained during the Australia ODI series. Bowling coach Morne Morkel confirmed that Iyer has begun his rehabilitation, offering another ray of hope for India’s upcoming assignments.
