Former India chief selector MSK Prasad has issued a strong message to current selector Ajit Agarkar, warning him against “messing with the minds” of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma by repeatedly pushing the idea of mandatory domestic cricket. Prasad recalled that during his tenure, the selection panel never once brought up such demands with MS Dhoni, trusting the veteran to manage his own workload and preparation.

Under Agarkar’s watch, Kohli and Rohit’s future has increasingly become a talking point, especially after the duo stepped away from Test cricket. While Agarkar initially managed their transition smoothly, India’s recent struggles have triggered scrutiny over both team selection and Gautam Gambhir’s coaching approach.

Both Kohli and Rohit are determined to extend their careers toward the 2027 ODI World Cup, a rare pursuit for players who will be close to 40 by then. Publicly, Agarkar has backed them, insisting the legends are not on trial in every match they play.

However, reports hint that the BCCI would prefer the duo to feature in domestic tournaments during breaks from international duty to keep match-fit and set an example for younger players.

Prasad, however, urged clarity and caution. “One should be careful that the issue is not brought up all the time. We never had a word with Dhoni about playing domestic cricket. He played whenever he felt it was necessary. There should be clear communication up front, or else stick to the perform-or-perish policy. There should be no ambiguity,” MSk Prasad told The Times of India.

He further stressed the importance of respecting the stature of senior players. “You shouldn’t be messing with the minds of such big players. They are the ones performing, not the younger lot. Ideally, yes, they can play domestic cricket when not on national duty, as it inspires state players—but it should not be forced.”

Despite the chatter, both Kohli and Rohit have kept the noise at bay through performances. Rohit was Player of the Series against Australia last month, while Kohli began the South Africa ODIs with a fluent century. Kohli even remarked after the match that he has never been someone who relies on excessive preparation, signalling his clarity despite the external pressure.
