India finally put an end to their unbelievable streak of bad luck at the toss, as stand-in captain KL Rahul got it right in the third and final ODI against South Africa at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. After losing 20 consecutive tosses across formats, India desperately needed a change in fortune, and Rahul delivered it with a moment that instantly went viral.

Before this match, India last won an ODI toss in the 2023 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium. Since then, Indian captains—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and even Rahul himself—had been on the wrong side of the coin far too often. So when the coin landed tails and went India’s way, Rahul couldn’t hold back his emotions. He broke into a joyful, almost childlike celebration that left commentators, match officials, and teammates chuckling.

South Africa’s Temba Bavuma called heads, but luck finally favoured India. For a brief moment, it felt like a mini victory even before the series decider began. Rahul didn’t hesitate and immediately opted to bowl first, confident that his team could make early inroads on a pitch that looked promising.

India made one notable change in their XI, bringing in the young and dynamic Tilak Varma in place of Washington Sundar. With the series level at 1-1, India needed more firepower in the middle order, and Varma’s inclusion added the spark they were looking for.

Speaking at the toss, KL Rahul revealed the reasoning behind choosing to bowl first. He explained that after observing conditions during training, the team noticed dew, though not as heavy as what they had encountered in Ranchi or Raipur. With that in mind, they wanted to challenge themselves by defending later. Rahul added that the track looked good throughout and the plan was to stay consistent with their processes, sharpen a few fielding aspects, and trust the results to follow.

On the opposite side, South African skipper Temba Bavuma admitted that he, too, would have preferred to bowl first but was now focused on putting up a strong total. With injuries ruling out Nandre Burger and Tony de Zorzi, South Africa introduced Ryan Rickelton and Ottneil Baartman for the decider. Bavuma viewed the match as a golden opportunity for the duo to step up and deliver under pressure.

Bavuma stressed the importance of getting a solid start to set the platform for the middle order. He acknowledged the vibrant Vizag crowd and the challenge of playing India at home but remained optimistic about their chances.

With both captains fired up and the toss curse finally broken, the stage was perfectly set for a high-stakes ODI finale in Visakhapatnam.
