Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has firmly pushed back against the growing chatter around Shubman Gill’s recent T20 form, reminding fans and critics that snap judgments rarely tell the full story. With Gill returning to the T20I setup as vice-captain during the Asia Cup, expectations naturally climbed.

But his 181 runs in the last 10 matches, coupled with a strike rate under 140, have triggered debates about whether he is slipping. Ashish Nehra, however, is having none of it. Having worked closely with Shubman Gill for two seasons at GT, Nehra was asked if he felt uneasy, especially with the IPL still three months away. His response was classic Nehra — crisp, unapologetic, and grounded in cricketing logic.

“Forget three months, even if the IPL was three weeks away, I still wouldn’t be worried,” he said, pointing out that T20 cricket is simply too unpredictable to judge anyone based on a small sample size. With only two games played against South Africa recently, Nehra believes the noise around Gill is exaggerated.

The former India pacer stressed that the real problem lies in India’s habit of judging players purely by numbers. According to him, two or three low scores cannot define a player of Gill’s calibre, especially in a format where even the best go through temporary dips.

In a tone laced with Ashish Nehra’s trademark sarcasm, he even offered a tongue-in-cheek solution to those demanding changes. “If you want options, you have plenty. Remove Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, open with Sai Sudharsan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. And if that’s not enough, bring in Washington Sundar and Ishan Kishan.”

His point was clear: constant chopping and changing based on short-term stats will only hurt Indian cricket. Nehra strongly defended Gill, reminding everyone that losing a match or two doesn’t justify dismantling a settled lineup. In his eyes, Gill remains a long-term asset—one who deserves patience, not panic.
