Former India batter Robin Uthappa has reignited the debate around Virat Kohli’s Test retirement, urging the modern-day great to reconsider his decision through a social media post that has since gone viral. Kohli, who announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025 ahead of India’s five-match tour of England, continues to command attention whenever he steps onto the field — or even into the nets.

Uthappa, a member of India’s iconic 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, shared a picture of Kohli during a recent training session ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. What caught Uthappa’s eye was not just Kohli’s intensity but the unmistakable hunger still visible in his eyes.

“Them eyes tell u a story. Surely it’s time to rescind his Test retirement. Would love to see him back in Test cricket,” Robin Uthappa wrote, striking a chord with fans who still believe Kohli has unfinished business in the longest format.

Kohli’s form since stepping away from Test cricket has only added fuel to the conversation. His last international outing came during the ODI series against South Africa, where he produced two back-to-back centuries and followed them up with an unbeaten fifty.

Soon after, Virat Kohli returned to domestic cricket, representing Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and scoring a commanding century — a rare but telling statement of intent. Before announcing his retirement, Kohli began the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in spectacular fashion, scoring a superb hundred in Perth.

However, his form dipped over the next four Tests as India went on to lose the series 1–3. The defeat triggered a comprehensive BCCI review in January 2025, after which senior players, including Kohli and Rohit Sharma, were asked to feature in domestic red-ball cricket under new guidelines.

Despite briefly returning to the Ranji Trophy, Kohli soon called time on his Test career, finishing as India’s most successful Test captain. He ended with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an impressive average of 46.85, leaving behind a legacy defined by aggression, fitness, and overseas success.

Robin Uthappa has previously hinted that the retirements of Kohli and Rohit did not feel entirely organic. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he suggested that the hunger was still very much alive. With Kohli now focused solely on ODIs and set to feature in the New Zealand series starting January 11, the question remains — is the final chapter of his Test career truly closed, or could a comeback still be written?
