Australia’s premier left-arm quick Mitchell Starc has offered a candid glimpse into his international future ahead of his much-anticipated return to the Big Bash League (BBL), making it clear that longevity for the sake of it is not part of his plan. As the 35-year-old prepares to don Sydney Sixers colours after more than a decade, Starc has drawn a firm line on how long he sees himself bowling at the highest level.

Starc has categorically ruled out the idea of playing Test cricket into his 40s, distancing himself from the extended career path taken by England legend James Anderson. For the Australian fast bowler, pace remains his biggest weapon—and he is realistic about the physical limits that come with it. Starc believes that once his trademark speed begins to dip or his body stops responding, that will be his cue to step away from international cricket.

While he continues to enjoy the challenge of red-ball and 50-over cricket, Starc admitted that bowling at 40 is simply not on his radar. He has already retired from T20I cricket, a move that underlined his desire to manage his workload carefully and extend his effectiveness in Tests and ODIs for as long as possible. As long as he can fulfil his role for Australia, Starc is keen to keep pulling on the Baggy Green.

Fresh off a crucial role in Australia’s emphatic Ashes 2025–26 triumph at home, Starc now turns his attention to the Big Bash League. He is set to make his BBL return with the Sydney Sixers against the Sydney Thunder at the SCG on January 16, marking his first appearance in the tournament in 11 years. Despite a long and demanding international season, Starc insists there is “still enough in the tank” for a short burst of T20 action.

The experienced pacer sees the BBL stint as a brief, high-energy assignment before an extended rest period. With two months off scheduled after the tournament, Starc feels confident about managing his workload without compromising his fitness for Australia’s upcoming commitments.

However, Starc also hinted that this BBL return may not become a regular feature going forward. His focus remains firmly on international cricket, with Australia’s next Test assignment—against Bangladesh in August—set to kick off a packed calendar. Historically selective about franchise cricket, Starc reaffirmed that representing Australia, especially in Test matches, will always take precedence.

As his career enters its final phase, Starc’s message is clear: quality over longevity. He remains committed to giving his best to Australian cricket, while listening closely to his body and knowing when the time is right to walk away.
