While the milestone underlined his rapid rise, the 14-year-old opener will still feel he missed a golden opportunity to convert his fluent start into a memorable hundred, falling for a well-made 72.
Suryavanshi’s journey over the past year has been nothing short of extraordinary. After grabbing national attention with a stunning IPL century for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans last season, the young prodigy has dominated the Youth ODI circuit. In just 20 matches, he has now piled up 1,047* runs, including three centuries and five half-centuries, at an average north of 52 and a staggering strike rate of 157.68. Those numbers reflect not just consistency, but a fearless approach that sets him apart.

The U19 World Cup didn’t begin smoothly for Suryavanshi, as he was dismissed for just two runs against the USA in India’s opening match. However, that setback only delayed the inevitable. Coming into the Bangladesh game, he needed just six runs to surpass Kohli’s tally of 978 Youth ODI runs, a landmark he crossed early in his innings.

Against Bangladesh, Suryavanshi looked a class above. While wickets fell around him — skipper Ayush Mhatre and Vedant Trivedi departing cheaply — the left-hander batted as if on a different surface. He took the attack to the bowlers from the outset, smashing 15 runs off an over from Iqbal Hossain Emon and racing to a 30-ball half-century. In doing so, he became the youngest player in history to score a fifty at an U19 World Cup.
However, just as a century beckoned, Suryavanshi’s innings ended on 72, caught off Emon’s bowling. Despite the disappointment, the record books now tell a compelling story.
