Former India middle-order batter Manoj Tiwary has stirred a fresh debate around the future of Gautam Gambhir as head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, suggesting that the BCCI should consider a major decision if India fails to defend their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2026. With the tournament set to be played in India, expectations are sky-high, especially with Suryakumar Yadav leading a side that currently sits atop the ICC T20I rankings.

Gambhir took charge as India’s head coach in July 2024 and has enjoyed a strong run in the shortest format. However, India’s inconsistent performances in Test cricket and a recent dip in ODIs have intensified scrutiny around his overall tenure. Speaking to InsideSport, Tiwary made it clear that success at the T20 World Cup could define Gambhir’s future with the national team.

“I think if India fail to win the T20 World Cup, then BCCI will have to take a big decision,” Manoj Tiwary said. He acknowledged that Gambhir has the backing of the board, with his contract running until 2027, but insisted that results at a marquee event like the World Cup can outweigh long-term plans.

“It will be a tough decision because the BCCI secretary has already said Gambhir will complete his tenure. But if India don’t win the T20 World Cup, the board will be forced to take a big call,” he added.

When asked about a potential successor, Manoj Tiwary named former India great VVS Laxman as the ideal candidate. He highlighted Laxman’s calm leadership style and coaching experience, pointing out that he has previously stepped in as head coach during Rahul Dravid’s absence and delivered positive results.

“Whenever Rahul Dravid used to take rest, VVS Laxman was the natural choice. He has a strong winning record as head coach, understands Indian cricket deeply, and is very level-headed,” Manoj Tiwary explained.

According to him, the BCCI should seriously consider persuading Laxman to take over if the situation arises, citing his tactical acumen, managerial skills, and reputation as a respected figure in the dressing room. With the T20 World Cup looming, Gambhir’s tenure could soon be judged on the biggest stage of them all.
