Delhi Capitals captain Jemimah Rodrigues was fined on Tuesday after her side was found guilty of a slow over-rate during their nail-biting Women’s Premier League clash against Gujarat Giants in Vadodara. The match, which Delhi lost by a heartbreaking margin of just three runs, proved costly for the Capitals skipper on the field and off it.

As it was Jemimah’s first over-rate offence of the season under the WPL Code of Conduct, she was handed a fine of ₹12 lakh. The penalty capped off a frustrating evening for Delhi, who came agonisingly close to pulling off a dramatic chase but fell short in the final over.
Gujarat Giants held their nerve brilliantly, thanks largely to standout bowling performances from Sophie Devine and Rajeshwari Gayakwad. Devine was exceptional with the ball, returning figures of 4/37, while Gayakwad’s incisive spell of 3/20 kept Delhi under constant pressure. Their combined efforts restricted Delhi to 171/8 in 20 overs while chasing a competitive target of 175.

The turning point came in the final over, with Delhi needing nine runs off six balls. Devine rose to the occasion, removing Sneh Rana and Niki Prasad in quick succession to halt Delhi’s momentum and seal a tense three-run victory for Gujarat.

Earlier, Gujarat’s innings was anchored by experienced Australian wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney, who played a composed knock of 58 off 46 balls. She was well supported by Anushka Sharma, whose quickfire 39 off 25 deliveries helped Gujarat post 174/9.

Delhi’s chase began positively, with Shafali Verma providing early impetus. However, her dismissal to Rajeshwari Gayakwad triggered a slowdown. Lizelle Lee struggled for fluency, and despite the presence of Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt, the Capitals failed to keep up with the required run rate.
Delhi Capitals now face a must-win encounter against UP Warriorz on Sunday, February 1, in Vadodara, as they look to bounce back and keep their playoff hopes alive.
