Pakistan’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has taken a dramatic turn after the country’s government cleared the team to travel to Sri Lanka for the tournament but decided that Pakistan will not take the field against India in their high-voltage group-stage clash scheduled for February 15. The decision, announced on Sunday through an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), has cast a shadow over what is traditionally one of the marquee fixtures of any ICC event.

According to the statement, while Pakistan have been granted permission to compete in the T20 World Cup starting February 7, the team has been instructed to forfeit the match against India. This development, though not yet formally communicated to the ICC, has already triggered widespread debate across the cricketing world, with fans and broadcasters questioning the future of India vs Pakistan encounters at global tournaments.
The backdrop to this decision lies in recent tensions within the ICC over venue-related concerns. Pakistan had publicly backed Bangladesh’s request to move their matches out of India due to security reasons.

When that request was rejected by the ICC, Pakistan’s chairman Mohsin Naqvi openly criticised the decision and even hinted at a possible boycott of the tournament. Bangladesh eventually refused to travel to India, and Scotland was selected instead, further intensifying the controversy.

With just days left before Pakistan’s squad is set to depart for Sri Lanka, the government’s call has added another layer of uncertainty. The timing is also symbolic, coming on the same day India and Pakistan locked horns in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, underlining the contrast between cricketing ties at junior and senior levels.
If Pakistan do not take the field against India on February 15, the team will automatically forfeit the match and lose two crucial points in the group stage. The ICC could also impose additional sanctions, depending on how the situation unfolds and whether the decision is formally conveyed to the governing body.

History shows that such scenarios are not unprecedented. Australia and West Indies forfeited matches in Sri Lanka during the 1996 World Cup due to security concerns, while England refused to play Zimbabwe in the 2003 World Cup for political reasons. New Zealand also skipped a group match against Kenya in Nairobi during the same tournament. However, an India vs Pakistan no-show at the T20 World Cup would be unprecedented in the modern era and a major blow to the tournament’s spectacle.
