Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has delivered a blistering verdict on the state of Pakistan cricket, calling it the “darkest period” in the nation’s history and demanding urgent structural reforms. In a strongly worded post on X, the former batting great appeared to take an indirect swipe at the leadership of the Pakistan Cricket Board, currently headed by Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has often found himself at the intersection of cricket and politics. Yousuf suggested that unless political interference and personal agendas are removed from the system, Pakistan cricket will continue its downward spiral.

“Unless we remove political influence and personal agendas from Pakistan cricket, we cannot return to the team we once were,” Mohammad Yousuf wrote. “This is the darkest period in our cricketing history, and my heart bleeds for it. Incompetent individuals must be removed from office and from the team.”

His remarks came after Pakistan’s crushing 61-run defeat to India in the T20 World Cup in Colombo, where they were bowled out for 114 chasing 175. The loss left the Salman Ali Agha-led side in a must-win situation to keep their Super 8 hopes alive.

Yousuf didn’t stop at administrative criticism. He also questioned the continued presence of senior players in the T20 setup.

“Time’s up for Shaheen, Babar, and Shadab,” he posted. “Pakistan’s T20 squad needs new performers, not empty wins against weaker sides.”

Having briefly served as Pakistan’s batting coach earlier in 2025, Yousuf’s explosive comments have intensified scrutiny around team selection, leadership accountability, and the broader governance model — issues that now sit at the heart of Pakistan cricket’s uncertain future.
