The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced a special tribute to some of Indian cricket’s most respected figures, confirming that parts of the iconic Wankhede Stadium will soon carry the names of legendary cricketers. In a decision revealed on Friday, the MCA confirmed that a stand inside the stadium will be named after former India all-rounder and coach Ravi Shastri, while three stadium gates will honour Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji.

The decision was taken during an Apex Council meeting of the MCA, which approved the proposal to dedicate the Level 1 stand located below the press box to Shastri. According to the association, the honour recognises Shastri’s immense contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket across multiple roles — as a player, captain, coach, and commentator.

In an official statement, the MCA said the move acknowledges Shastri’s lasting influence on the game and his role in shaping modern Indian cricket. The former all-rounder represented India with distinction during the 1980s and later played a significant role in guiding the national team during his tenure as head coach.

Apart from the stand named after Shastri, the MCA also decided to dedicate three stadium gates to celebrated cricketers who made a major impact on Mumbai’s rich cricketing history. Gate No. 3 at Wankhede Stadium will now carry the name of Sardesai, who played 30 Tests for India and appeared in 179 first-class matches between 1960-61 and 1972-73.

Gate No. 5 will honour Edulji, one of the pioneers of women’s cricket in India. She represented the country in 20 Tests and 34 ODIs between 1976 and 1993 and later served Indian cricket in administrative roles as well.

Meanwhile, Gate No. 6 will be named after Solkar, remembered as one of the finest close-in fielders the game has produced. The all-rounder played 27 Tests and seven ODIs for India and was a key member of the historic team that achieved overseas success in the early 1970s.

MCA president Ajinkya Naik emphasised that Mumbai cricket has always been built on the legacy of its legends.
