India’s T20 World Cup title defence has found its rhythm again after a brief wobble. On Sunday night at Eden Gardens, the hosts sealed a dramatic five-wicket win over the West Indies cricket team to book a place in the semifinals for the third consecutive edition of the tournament. While the contest turned into a high-scoring spectacle, India’s bowlers deserve credit for ensuring the target stayed within reach. Given the nature of the pitch and the explosive form of the Caribbean batters, restricting the opposition to 195 felt like a small victory in itself.

On a surface where the ball came nicely onto the bat, and the outfield was lightning quick, anything beyond 200 could have placed India under severe pressure in a knockout-style clash. Still, chasing 196 was never going to be straightforward. India’s start only added to the tension as early wickets left them wobbling inside the powerplay. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan departed cheaply, leaving the middle order to rebuild under pressure.
That is when Sanju Samson delivered one of the finest innings of his T20 international career. The stylish wicketkeeper-batter produced a magnificent unbeaten 97, guiding India through a tense chase and ultimately finishing the job in the final over. It was an innings filled with composure, timing, and calculated aggression — a reminder of the immense talent Samson has always possessed.

The knock carried even greater significance considering the challenges Samson has faced over the past few months. He had lost his place as an opener twice — first to Shubman Gill and later to Kishan — and had featured in only two of India’s five matches in the ongoing World Cup before this game.
When the team management brought him back into the XI, it also reshuffled the batting order to counter opponents who had been deploying off-spinners early against India’s left-handed top order. India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has long backed Samson’s abilities, was quick to praise the batter after the match.
“He is a world-class player. We all know how good Sanju is,” Gautam Gambhir said during the post-match press conference. “It was all about backing him. When the team needed him the most, he showed his true potential.”

Gambhir also highlighted the effortless nature of Samson’s batting. According to the coach, the innings was built on pure cricketing strokes rather than brute power.
“I never felt he was trying to accelerate. Those were just natural cricket shots. I didn’t see any muscling of the ball. That shows the kind of talent he has,” Gautam Gambhir explained, noting how comfortable Samson looked once he settled at the crease.

The coach further revealed that Samson had been striking the ball beautifully in the nets leading up to the game. Despite a difficult series against New Zealand national cricket team earlier in the season, Gambhir insisted the team management always believed the breakthrough innings was around the corner.
He also emphasised the value of having multiple wicketkeeper-batting options in the squad, pointing out that both Samson and Kishan provide flexibility for the future. For India, Samson’s knock could not have come at a better time. With the semifinals approaching, the innings might just be the spark that reignites their title defence.
