The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has hinted at a major boost for cricket in Jammu and Kashmir following the region’s historic triumph in the Ranji Trophy. Speaking in a recent interview, Saikia revealed that discussions are underway about building an international-standard stadium in the region. He also confirmed that national selectors have taken note of the impressive performances of young pacer Auqib Nabi during the domestic season. Saikia described the Ranji Trophy victory as a landmark moment not just for Jammu and Kashmir but for Indian cricket as a whole.

“It is a momentous occasion for Indian cricket as well as for the cricket of Jammu & Kashmir. It was a big moment because a lot came out of it. Every place and every state of the country is a stronghold of cricket nowadays under the patronage of the BCCI,” Devajit Saikia said while speaking to TOI.

He highlighted that the BCCI’s long-term mission is to strengthen cricket across every corner of the country rather than limiting development to traditional centres.

“It is very important to note that there is no such infrastructure in J&K from where they can host international matches. But the time has come now,” Devajit Saikia explained. He added that the team’s success has effectively shown the governing body the path forward. “With their performance, they have given us the roadmap. They have indicated that the BCCI should take a major step for the development of cricket in J&K, especially in the area of infrastructure development.”

Saikia further revealed that the board is already planning improvements in facilities.

“We are already working on indoor cricket facilities in J&K. It is in the pipeline. But we should also have a proper stadium in J&K. Wherever they decide, land allotment has to be done. That is the call of the time now.” Apart from infrastructure, Saikia also praised the performances of Auqib Nabi, whose bowling played a key role in Jammu and Kashmir’s title-winning campaign. “He has played very well. His contribution has been major to the success of the team. He took five wickets in the quarter-final, five wickets in the semi-final and left nothing in the final. His spell changed the final.”

Saikia also emphasized that the selectors closely monitor domestic competitions to ensure emerging players receive the recognition they deserve.

“We have entrusted our selectors to be present at each and every Ranji Trophy game. In the final and in other matches, our selectors were present. I am sure they have done their job well.” He added that the BCCI system is designed so that talented players from smaller regions don’t go unnoticed. “The BCCI has set the stage right so that no proper talent goes unnoticed. Everybody has to be noticed.”

To underline his point, Saikia cited the example of Ishan Kishan, whose strong domestic performances helped him return to the Indian team. “When a player performs well, take Ishan Kishan as an example. He was out of the limelight for two years. Then he performed and was immediately selected for the Indian team. Now you see how he is progressing and contributing to the team’s success,” Devaji Saikia added.
