In high-pressure tournaments, dressing-room moments often reveal a team’s character. Ahead of India’s crucial Super 8 clash against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata during the T20 World Cup 2026, head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered an emotional message that reflected both empathy and leadership. Before addressing the entire squad, Gambhir had a few heartfelt words for Rinku Singh, who had been going through a deeply difficult personal phase.

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Indian coach reminded the young batter that the entire team stood firmly behind him. “Rinku, it takes a lot of character to come and join the team. Remember one thing, you are not alone — the whole team is standing next to you. Stay strong,” Gautam Gambhir said in the pre-match huddle.
The message carried added emotional weight as Rinku had recently lost his father, Khanchand Singh, who passed away in a hospital in Greater Noida after battling stage-four cancer. The funeral took place in Aligarh, where friends, family members, and locals gathered to pay their final respects. Despite the personal tragedy, Rinku chose to stay connected with the team during the tournament, reflecting immense mental strength.

He urged the players not to shy away from the intensity of knockout matches but to approach the contest with courage and positivity.
Gambhir emphasised that whenever pressure creeps in, the team should respond with proactive cricket rather than retreating into caution. His core message was simple: enjoy the occasion, play boldly, and support each other on the field.

India responded perfectly to that message on match day. Powered by a magnificent unbeaten 97 from Sanju Samson, the defending champions chased down a challenging target to secure a thrilling five-wicket win over the West Indies and book their place in the semifinals.
The victory set up a high-stakes semifinal clash with England national cricket team, who topped their Super 8 group after winning all three matches. With momentum on their side, India now head into the knockout stage with renewed confidence and belief.
