India’s batting unit delivered a powerful statement in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as they faced the England team at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After winning the toss, England captain Harry Brook chose to field first, hoping to exploit early conditions. However, India responded with aggressive intent, led by a brilliant knock from Sanju Samson.

Samson, who entered the game on the back of strong form, made England pay for an early mistake. In the third over of the innings, he miscued a full delivery from Jofra Archer straight toward Brook. It looked like a straightforward catch, but the England skipper failed to hold on, handing Samson a crucial lifeline when he was on just 15. That drop soon proved costly.
Once settled, Samson shifted gears with remarkable confidence. The wicketkeeper-batter showcased a range of attacking strokes, finding boundaries with ease and maintaining a brisk scoring rate. His innings soon turned into another match-defining contribution as he registered his second half-century of the tournament — and notably his second consecutive fifty. At one stage, Samson was cruising on 74 off just 36 balls, smashing eight fours and four towering sixes while looking poised for his maiden T20 World Cup century.

Samson’s resurgence has been one of the tournament’s most compelling redemption stories. Initially left out of India’s preferred playing XI, he had limited opportunities early in the competition. Apart from a brief cameo against Namibia and his stunning unbeaten 97 in a previous game, chances had been scarce. Yet when the pressure mounted in the knockout stages, Samson stepped up with authority.

While Samson flourished, Abhishek Sharma endured another frustrating outing. The young opener once again fell to off-spin, dismissed by Will Jacks after showing early promise. It marked the third time in the tournament that Sharma had been dismissed by an off-spinner, highlighting a clear vulnerability in his batting.
India’s aggressive approach was further reinforced by Ishan Kishan, who played a brisk cameo of 39 off just 18 deliveries, including four boundaries and two sixes. By the halfway mark of the innings, India had surged to 119/2 in 10 overs, maintaining a run rate well above 11 per over.
