The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has reached its grand finale, with the India national cricket team set to face the New Zealand national cricket team in what promises to be a thrilling title clash. Both teams head into the final with history on their minds, but with very different motivations. For India, the goal is clear — defend their T20 World Cup crown and achieve the rare milestone of winning the tournament on home soil.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd adds extra motivation for the defending champions, but it also brings immense pressure. On the other hand, New Zealand are chasing a historic moment of their own, as the Black Caps look to secure their first-ever T20 World Cup title after several heartbreaking near misses in global tournaments.
The final will take place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, a venue that has left Indian fans with mixed emotions at recent ICC events. The memory of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final still lingers, when the Australia cricket team stunned India to lift the trophy at the same ground. That defeat ended India’s unbeaten run in the tournament and left supporters heartbroken.

Adding to those concerns, India also suffered their only loss in the current tournament at the same venue, when they were beaten by the South Africa national cricket team earlier in the competition. Despite that setback, fans remain hopeful that the team can overcome the Ahmedabad jinx and deliver a memorable victory in the final.

Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged that playing in front of a heavily pro-India crowd will be one of the biggest challenges for his side. However, the left-arm spinner admitted that his team would love to silence the crowd, much like Pat Cummins and Australia did during the 2023 ODI World Cup final. “That’s the goal — to silence the crowd,” Santner said ahead of the match.
He also pointed out how competitive the tournament has been, with several matches decided by small but crucial moments. According to Santner, those fine margins could once again determine the outcome of the final.

“There is obviously a lot of pressure on India to win the World Cup at home. If we can go out there and put that added pressure on them, we’ll see what happens,” he added. Despite the challenge, Santner said the New Zealand squad is buzzing with excitement. With a World Cup trophy on the line, the Kiwi captain described the final as a “one-game shootout,” where anything can happen.
