Before becoming one of the most feared fast bowlers in world cricket, Jasprit Bumrah was just another teenager trying to figure out how seriously he wanted to take the game. Long before his rise to global stardom, Bumrah had a reputation for skipping practice sessions — something that often frustrated his childhood coach.

Bumrah joined the Royal Cricket Academy in Ahmedabad when he was around 16 years old. At the time, the youngster was studying at Nirman High School and primarily playing school-level cricket. His coach, Kishore Trivedi, quickly noticed that although the teenager possessed natural talent, he lacked consistency and discipline in his training.

Speaking to India Today, Trivedi recalled how he had to push Bumrah to take the sport more seriously. According to him, the future India star often missed practice sessions, choosing to spend time with friends instead of committing fully to cricket.

“He came to me when he was 16 and enrolled at the academy. At that stage, he was mostly playing school cricket and wasn’t very serious about the game,” Kishore Trivedi said. “After observing him for a couple of days, I told him that if he wanted to achieve something in cricket, he had to show up regularly. You cannot practice one day and then disappear for the next three.”

To discipline the young fast bowler, Trivedi came up with an unusual method. Whenever Bumrah skipped practice, he would make him stand behind the nets for an entire day during training sessions.

“He was quite a naughty boy,” Trivedi recalled. “Sometimes he would attend practice once and then miss the next few days. When he returned, I would make him stand behind the nets the whole day. It happened several times before he finally realised he had to be consistent.”

Importantly, Kishore Trivedi never tried to change Bumrah’s unusual bowling action — something many coaches might have attempted. Instead, he focused on refining the basics and helping the youngster develop variations like yorkers, bouncers and cutters.

That decision proved crucial. Today, Bumrah is widely regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers of the modern era, dominating batters across formats with his unique action and remarkable accuracy.
