In a high-pressure semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the India national cricket team pulled off a dramatic finish against the England national cricket team at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. With England needing 30 runs from the final over while chasing a daunting 254, the game still hung in the balance thanks to a sensational knock from young batter Jacob Bethell.

Bethell had played one of the finest innings of the tournament, smashing a brilliant century and keeping England alive in what seemed like an impossible chase. On a batting-friendly pitch at Wankhede, his fearless strokeplay had put the Indian bowlers under enormous pressure, while fans inside the stadium watched nervously as the contest headed into the final over.

That’s when Hardik Pandya stepped up with a moment of brilliance in the field that ultimately turned the match in India’s favour. On the first ball of the 20th over, Bethell drove the ball toward long-off. Pandya quickly gathered it and fired a sharp throw toward the striker’s end. Determined to keep the strike, Bethell attempted a risky second run that was never really on.

Although the throw drifted slightly wide, wicketkeeper Sanju Samson reacted swiftly, collecting the ball and breaking the stumps just in time to catch the diving batter short of his crease. The run-out ended Bethell’s remarkable innings and effectively sealed India’s thrilling seven-run victory.

Reflecting on the moment later, Hardik Pandya revealed that staying calm was the key to executing the decisive throw. “See, there are two ways in life. I could have got my heart racing and not been able to execute. So I went into my zen mode. Instead of panicking, I stayed calm — and I’m really proud of that,” Pandya explained.

He also acknowledged how dangerous Bethell had been throughout the innings. “The way he batted, I knew he was the one batter we had to get out. I just focused on throwing it where it needed to go. I would have liked it a bit closer to the stumps, but thankfully we got the job done,” he added.

Pandya’s animated celebration after the run-out captured the emotion of the moment, as India sealed their place in the T20 World Cup final.
