Team India locked horns with arch-rivals New Zealand in the high-stakes final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With the pressure of a global title on the line, India’s bowlers were expected to deliver early breakthroughs after the team posted a massive total earlier in the contest.

New Zealand’s opening pair, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, walked in with clear attacking intent. Known for their aggressive approach in T20 cricket, the duo tried to put the Indian bowling attack under pressure from the start. Allen, in particular, looked eager to dominate the powerplay and smashed a boundary early in his innings. The Kiwi openers briefly threatened to build momentum with a few crisp strokes that energized the New Zealand camp.
However, India’s dependable all-rounder Axar Patel stepped up at the right moment to shift the momentum back in India’s favour. Bowling with excellent control and variation, Axar provided the crucial first breakthrough by dismissing Finn Allen for just 9 runs off 7 balls, an innings that included one boundary.

Interestingly, Allen had received a brief lifeline earlier when Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube dropped a catch, creating a moment of tension in the stadium and the Indian dugout. Fortunately for India, Allen failed to capitalise on the opportunity.

Axar Patel didn’t stop there. The left-arm spinner soon delivered another massive blow by removing one of New Zealand’s most dangerous middle-order batters, Glenn Phillips, for just 5 runs. Phillips is widely regarded as a match-winner in T20 cricket, and his early dismissal significantly weakened New Zealand’s chase.
