Tensions briefly flared during the high-voltage T20 World Cup final between India national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team when pacer Arshdeep Singh and Kiwi all-rounder Daryl Mitchell were involved in a heated moment in the 11th over. After fielding the ball in his follow-through, Arshdeep threw it back towards the striker’s end despite Mitchell already being safely inside his crease.

The ball struck Mitchell, leaving the New Zealand batter visibly frustrated. The brief confrontation could have escalated further, but Suryakumar Yadav stepped in quickly and helped calm the situation, restoring composure on the field during an otherwise intense final.

While that moment grabbed attention, the bigger story of the night belonged to India’s explosive batting display. After being put into bat by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, India piled up a mammoth 255/5 in 20 overs, one of the highest totals ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

The foundation was laid by the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who tore into the Kiwi bowling attack with fearless strokeplay. The duo stitched together a rapid 98-run opening partnership in just 7.1 overs, immediately putting New Zealand on the back foot.

Abhishek set the tone with a blistering 52 off just 21 balls, smashing six boundaries and three sixes. However, it was Samson who once again proved why he has been the standout performer of the tournament. The wicketkeeper-batter delivered a stunning 89 off 46 balls, laced with five fours and eight towering sixes, maintaining an impressive strike rate of nearly 193.

With that knock, Samson achieved a remarkable milestone. He surpassed Virat Kohli to register the most runs by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup edition. Samson’s tournament tally now stands at 321 runs in five innings, averaging over 80 with a strike rate close to 200. His consistency has also placed him in elite company, joining players like Shahid Afridi, Mahela Jayawardene, Babar Azam, KL Rahul, Kusal Mendis and Sahibzada Farhan as one of the few batters to register three consecutive 50-plus scores in T20 World Cups.
