India delivered a dominant performance to defeat New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, sealing a historic victory in front of a packed crowd. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first, hoping early assistance from the pitch would trouble India’s powerful batting lineup.

India’s openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson began cautiously but soon shifted gears. The turning point came when Lockie Ferguson conceded 24 runs in a single powerplay over as Abhishek launched a brutal assault. The left-hander smashed a blistering 52 off just 21 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes to register his second half-century of the tournament.

After Abhishek was dismissed by Rachin Ravindra, Samson took full control of the innings. He stitched together a crucial partnership with Ishan Kishan, who contributed a rapid 54 from 25 deliveries, including four boundaries and four sixes. Samson, meanwhile, produced a captain’s knock of 89 from 46 balls, striking five fours and eight towering sixes.

New Zealand briefly clawed back in the middle overs when James Neesham picked up three wickets in the 16th over. However, Shivam Dube delivered a late flourish, smashing 28 not out from just eight balls to power India to a massive 255/5 in 20 overs — the highest total in a T20 World Cup final.

Chasing the daunting target, New Zealand relied on openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert to provide a strong start. But India’s bowlers quickly seized control. Axar Patel removed Allen for just nine runs before India’s pace attack tightened the screws. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Axar struck in quick succession, dismissing Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman to leave New Zealand struggling at 70/4.

Seifert briefly revived hopes with a quickfire 52 off 26 balls before falling to Varun Chakaravarthy. Daryl Mitchell tried to counterattack but was dismissed by Axar for 17, while Santner added a fighting 43.

India eventually bowled out New Zealand for 159 in 19 overs. Bumrah finished with outstanding figures of 4/15, while Axar Patel claimed 3/27 to seal a commanding 96-run victory.

With this triumph, India created history — becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times, the first to successfully defend the title, and the first to lift the trophy on home soil. The cricketing world, including former players and fans, quickly flooded social media with praise for India’s emphatic title-winning performance.
