Head coach Gautam Gambhir once again reinforced his clear philosophy about team success after the India national cricket team lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title. India sealed the trophy with a commanding victory over the New Zealand national cricket team at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, capping off a dominant campaign.

Following the historic triumph, Gautam Gambhir addressed the media and reiterated a principle that has defined his coaching tenure — team trophies matter far more than individual milestones. The former India opener believes cricket conversations in the country have too often revolved around personal achievements rather than collective success.

“My simple philosophy with Surya has always been that milestones don’t matter. It’s the trophies that matter,” Gautam Gambhir said during the press conference. “For too long in Indian cricket, we’ve spoken about milestones. And I hope that till I’m there, we’re not going to talk about milestones.”

Gautam Gambhir also called for a broader shift in how the cricketing community views achievements in a team sport. According to him, the focus should always remain on lifting trophies rather than celebrating individual numbers. “Stop celebrating milestones, celebrate trophies,” he stated. “That is going to be important because the bigger purpose of a team sport is to win trophies, not score individual runs. It has never mattered to me, and it will never matter to me.”

The head coach also praised India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav for sharing the same mindset and playing a crucial role in building a strong team culture.

“Look, I’ve said it before, I think Surya has made my life a lot easier in this format,” Gautam Gambhir said. “I think he’s a phenomenal leader. He very rightly mentioned that he doesn’t want to be called a captain — he wants to be called a leader. A leader is a far bigger figure in a dressing room than a captain.”

Gambhir pointed to the fearless batting approach displayed by India throughout the tournament as proof that players were prioritising team success over personal milestones. He specifically referenced the performances of Sanju Samson, who delivered multiple match-winning innings during the knockout stages.

“You can see it in the last three games — what Sanju did. Imagine if you had been playing for a milestone. Probably we wouldn’t have got to 50,” Gautam Gambhir explained. Ultimately, Gambhir believes that sharing the same vision with Suryakumar has been key to building a winning environment inside the Indian dressing room. “And I think Surya and I have been on the same page, especially on this one,” he concluded.

With this philosophy driving the team forward, India’s focus remains firmly on collective glory and future trophies rather than individual records.
