Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is widely regarded as one of the finest cricketers India has produced in the modern era. During an illustrious international career spanning 2010 to 2024, the Chennai-born bowler played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is for the India national cricket team. Across formats, Ashwin consistently delivered match-winning performances, often turning games in India’s favour with both bat and ball.

Over those 15 years, Ravichandran Ashwin had the opportunity to play under several prominent Indian captains, including MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina. However, when it comes to leadership, Ashwin recently revealed that Rohit Sharma stands out as the best captain he has played under.

Speaking at a recent public event, Ashwin explained why Rohit’s leadership style left such a strong impression on him. According to the experienced spinner, captaincy is not just about making decisions on the field but also about managing people and responsibilities within the team environment.

“Captaincy or leadership, as you may call it, is powerful, but it also comes with a huge responsibility,” Ravichandran Ashwin said. Reflecting on his time with different leaders, he admitted that Rohit’s approach to handling players made him exceptional.

Ashwin praised Rohit for ensuring that every player in the squad felt valued and supported. He highlighted that Rohit consistently kept the interests of each team member in mind and treated everyone with fairness, without showing any bias.

“To keep the interest of every single player in your squad in mind and look after them without even a hint of bias is extremely difficult,” Ravichandran Ashwin noted. “I have said it before and I will say it again — with Rohit alongside me, he is probably the best captain I have ever played under.”
