Sanju Samson’s journey in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 perfectly summed up the unpredictable nature of cricket. From being dropped from the playing XI to eventually becoming the tournament’s standout performer, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter scripted one of the most remarkable comeback stories of the competition. Samson was initially named in India’s World Cup squad on December 20, 2025, as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter and opening option.

However, his position quickly came under scrutiny after a disappointing five-match T20I series against New Zealand, in which he managed only 46 runs. As a result, he was left out of India’s starting XI for the early matches of the tournament. A brief opportunity came his way when Abhishek Sharma fell ill ahead of India’s second Group A clash against the Namibia cricket team in Delhi on February 12. Samson was drafted into the side, but his comeback didn’t go as planned. He scored a quick 22 off eight balls but failed to convert the start into a meaningful innings.

After that outing, many believed his chances in the tournament were effectively over. However, the Indian team management decided to back Samson once more in a must-win Super 8s encounter against Zimbabwe in Chennai on February 26. That match turned out to be the turning point of his campaign. Samson provided India with a confident start and regained the trust of the team management.

From that moment onward, the 30-year-old looked like a completely different player. In the following matches, he delivered three outstanding innings that shaped India’s title-winning campaign. Samson smashed an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies cricket team, followed it up with a blistering 89 against the England cricket team in the semifinal, and then produced another 89 in the final against New Zealand.

Those crucial knocks not only powered the India cricket team to their T20 World Cup triumph but also made Samson the highest run-scorer for India in the tournament. His consistent performances earned him multiple Player of the Match awards and eventually the prestigious Player of the Tournament honour.

Reflecting on his incredible journey in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Samson admitted that there was a moment when he felt his dream had slipped away.

“I always believed that I had the ability to do this for India. I had dreamt about performing in a World Cup, but after the New Zealand series I genuinely felt that my chance was gone,” Sanju Samson said. He also spoke about the overwhelming support he received from fans, which helped him stay positive during a difficult phase. “I truly believe that genuine prayers and good wishes have incredible power. The love and support from the fans meant everything to me. I want to thank every single person who believed in me and prayed for me,” he added.

Samson further reflected on how cricket often unfolds in ways players cannot predict. While one can dream about success, the path to achieving it is rarely straightforward.

“You can dream about what you want to achieve, but you can’t plan the exact path to reach there. After the New Zealand series, I honestly thought my dream was broken. But somehow things turned around, and I’m grateful for how it all happened,” he said. In the end, Samson’s World Cup journey became a powerful reminder that resilience, belief, and a little bit of fortune can completely transform a player’s story on the biggest stage.
