Fitness concerns have slightly altered MS Dhoni’s role in the Indian Premier League, with the veteran often batting lower down the order for Chennai Super Kings. The legendary finisher, who once dominated bowling attacks with effortless six-hitting, has recently been coming in at No. 8 or even No. 9. While Dhoni has still delivered a few trademark cameos, the limited number of balls he faces has sparked debate among fans and experts about whether CSK are fully utilising his batting ability.

Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara is among those who believe Dhoni should be given a higher spot in the batting order. Speaking during a discussion on JioHotstar, Pujara questioned the logic behind sending the experienced campaigner so late in the innings.
“I don’t see a point in MS Dhoni batting at No. 8 or 9, because he has the potential to turn games around single-handedly, something no other batter in the CSK team can do,” Cheteshwar Pujara explained. “If he bats for only five or ten balls, imagine what Mahi bhai can do if he gets 25 or 30 deliveries.”

Pujara also reflected on his time with CSK, recalling the franchise’s unique team culture. The right-hander was part of the squad that helped the Super Kings secure their record-equalling fifth IPL title in 2021. According to him, the environment inside the CSK dressing room plays a major role in the team’s sustained success.

“I’ve been in the CSK setup, and it genuinely feels like a family,” Cheteshwar Pujara said. “There’s always clarity about what is expected from each player, and that helps everyone perform their role with confidence.”
He also pointed out that loyalty has long been a hallmark of the franchise, with many players staying with the team for years. However, he acknowledged that the franchise is currently going through a transition phase, gradually giving more opportunities to younger players.

Meanwhile, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan expressed confidence that Dhoni will feature in every match this season. With the franchise bringing in Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals, speculation has grown about how Dhoni will be utilised. Viswanathan clarified that the final decision rests with the team’s cricketing staff, who will determine whether Dhoni plays as a wicketkeeper-batter, specialist finisher, or even as an impact player depending on match situations.
