Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra believes that Rohit Sharma should remain actively involved throughout a T20 match instead of being used solely as an Impact Player by the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. The debate around Rohit’s role gained momentum during IPL 2025, when the Mumbai Indians frequently deployed the veteran opener as an Impact Player.

Chopra feels that using a fully fit cricketer in such a limited role does not make strategic sense, especially considering Rohit’s vast experience and leadership qualities. Speaking on JioHotstar, Aakash Chopra explained that an opener’s routine and mindset revolve around being involved in the game from the start, which makes it unusual for someone like Rohit to sit out most of the match before coming in to bat.
“Logically, if you are fit, you should play the whole game and not be substituted. Especially when you are batting second, you shouldn’t come in as an Impact Player. An opener is not used to watching 20 overs of the match from the dugout,” Aakash Chopra said.

He further emphasised that Rohit’s physical fitness and experience make him valuable both on and off the ball.
“Opening batters are used to staying on the field, preparing accordingly and then hitting the ground running. Rohit Sharma is the fittest, meanest and maybe the strongest at this point in time, so he should be on the ground for all 40 overs. That’s actually how Mumbai Indians will be able to make full use of Rohit Sharma,” he added.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh also echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of Rohit’s presence on the field. According to Harbhajan, a seasoned campaigner like Rohit can provide crucial tactical input to captain Hardik Pandya during high-pressure situations.
“Rohit Sharma has been used as the 12th man who just bats, but a player like him should be on the field. In tough matches, when the captain needs guidance, Rohit Sharma can provide that support,” Harbhajan Singh noted.
