India further cemented its reputation as a powerhouse in the shortest format after winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time in 2026. The Men in Blue defeated the New Zealand national cricket team in a one-sided final to lift their third overall T20 World Cup title, underlining a period of remarkable dominance in T20 internationals. What makes this achievement even more impressive is the consistency India has shown over the past few years.

Since winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, India have not lost a single bilateral T20I series or multi-nation tournament. Their last bilateral series defeat in the format came back in August 2023 against the West Indies national cricket team, when they narrowly lost a five-match series 3-2. The 2026 triumph also marked an important milestone for captain Suryakumar Yadav, who became the third Indian skipper to lift the prestigious T20 World Cup trophy.
Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir created history of his own by becoming the first Indian to win the tournament both as a player and later as a head coach. India’s sustained dominance has sparked plenty of debate among cricket experts. Is it the tactical leadership of Suryakumar Yadav? The strategic influence of Gambhir? Or simply the presence of world-class T20 talent across the squad?

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes the answer lies primarily in India’s extraordinary talent pool. According to him, the depth of players available in Indian cricket is so strong that the team’s success is not dependent on a single captain or coach.
“The Indian team no longer needs a famous name as captain or coach,” Mohammad Kaif said on his YouTube channel. “The players themselves are strong enough. I understand that Gautam Gambhir had a significant role in India’s T20 World Cup win – he helped build this team and backed players like Sanju Samson. Suryakumar Yadav also didn’t lose a single bilateral series until the T20 World Cup.”
However, Mohammad Kaif believes the bigger picture lies in the structure of Indian cricket.

“The structure of this team is such that it will only improve from here. You won’t see a downfall.” He also highlighted the depth of India’s bench strength, noting that several high-quality players are waiting in the wings. “The main reason is our pool of players. We have multiple options for every spot. Nobody is even talking about players like Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shreyas Iyer. Sai Sudharsan has also scored runs in the IPL and even won the Orange Cap.”
Mohammad Kaif credited the strong ecosystem built by the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Indian Premier League for nurturing players who are comfortable performing under pressure.
“Because of that, our players are already far ahead in the race,” he explained. Mohammad Kaif also clarified that his comments were not meant to undermine the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav or the coaching influence of Gambhir. “I am not trying to downplay the contributions of Gambhir or Surya,” he said. “But the reality is that you could appoint anyone as captain – Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah or Hardik Pandya – and this Indian team would still win nine out of ten matches.”

Mohammad Kaif also pointed to how smoothly India transitioned after the retirement of senior stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja from the T20I format.
“Even when Rohit, Virat and Jadeja stepped away, the team wasn’t affected much because we had backup players ready,” Mohamamd Kaif concluded. “I feel we have very capable players. Even in the current India squad, you can easily spot three or four potential captains. In that sense, we are very blessed. Our strong foundation will ensure that we remain a powerful team.”
