Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have officially begun preparations for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, with their pre-season training camp getting underway ahead of the tournament’s start on March 28. The franchise, known for its strong core and structured preparation, began its first training session as a group of emerging and squad players reported to camp.

Among the first batch of players to arrive were Shardul Thakur, Mayank Markande, Allah Ghazanfar, Naman Dhir, Raja Angad Bawa, Robin Minz, Raghu Sharma, Mayank Rawat, Danish Malewar, Mohammad Izhar and Ashwani Kumar. The initial sessions focused on easing players back into competitive mode while setting the tone for the long campaign ahead.

Senior stars such as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and captain Hardik Pandya are expected to join the squad soon as preparations intensify in the coming days. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene highlighted the importance of starting the pre-season with the right mindset and energy.

“There’s always something special about the first day of pre-season. You see the players walk in, the energy builds, and the objective is to start strong. We’ve got the boys who know this franchise inside out, and we have got some exciting new faces coming in,” Mahela Jayawardene said.

 

 

He further stressed how the opening training session plays a key role in shaping the team’s approach for the entire season.

“Day one sets the tone for the entire campaign. We wanted everyone to feel the intent from the very first session, in how we train, how we prepare, and how we show up for each other. The first session is always exciting, but it’s also the start of something serious, and we know what we’re building towards.”

The day began with a structured fitness and conditioning program led by the team’s strength and conditioning staff. Players were put through movement drills, agility exercises and physical assessments designed to prepare them for the demanding tournament schedule.

Mumbai Indians will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
