Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has lauded Team India for their dominant run in the T20 World Cup 2026, shedding light on a crucial yet often underappreciated factor behind their sustained success in white-ball cricket. Ponting described India as one of the most complete T20 sides in recent years, emphasising that their strength goes far beyond just star players.

“It’s really hard to argue against their record,” he said, pointing to India’s remarkable consistency in ICC events over the last five to six years. “Back-to-back World Cups—hats off to them.”
A key element, according to Ponting, is India’s exceptional depth and well-structured system. The former Australian skipper highlighted how the team’s bench strength ensures minimal drop in performance, even when key players are unavailable. This consistency, he believes, has been central to India’s success across major tournaments.

Ponting also credited the Indian Premier League with shaping match-ready cricketers. “One thing that’s probably overlooked is the amount of experience these players have, whether in international cricket or the IPL,” he explained. “The IPL games are every bit as big as international matches,” he added, underlining how the league prepares players for high-pressure situations.

This exposure, combined with India’s strong domestic structure, ensures that players transition seamlessly onto the global stage. Another standout factor has been India’s squad balance. Ponting noted that the team entered the 2026 tournament with a well-rounded lineup, capable of adapting to different match scenarios without losing momentum.
India’s recent white-ball record further reinforces his point. Since their narrow defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, the Men in Blue have bounced back emphatically, securing three ICC titles—the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, along with the Champions Trophy in 2025.

For Ponting, it is this combination of depth, experience, and a robust cricketing ecosystem that sets India apart. While star performances grab headlines, it is the system behind the scenes that continues to drive India’s dominance in modern-day white-ball cricket.
