At a time when questions around his place in the XI began to surface, Abhishek Sharma leaned on the guidance of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh. The former India all-rounder played a crucial role in helping him stay mentally strong during the rough patch.

“I spoke to Yuvi paaji regularly. He has always been someone I can go to for honest advice. His message was simple: Don’t change who you are as a player,” Abhishek Sharma revealed in an interaction with Hindustan Times. “He told me that aggressive players will have phases like this, but if you keep backing your strengths, runs will come.”

That clarity proved vital. Instead of overhauling his approach, Abhishek Sharma focused on refining his decision-making without compromising his natural attacking game.

“It was mostly about trusting my natural game. I did not want to go away from the style that got me to this level. The only thing I tried to do was be a bit clearer in my shot selection early on,” he explained.

Signs of a turnaround emerged with a composed 55 against Zimbabwe in the Super 8s. But it was in the final where Abhishek truly delivered, smashing a breathtaking 52 off just 21 balls against New Zealand, a knock that underlined his resilience and match-winning ability.

Reflecting on the pressure, he admitted, “You cannot completely avoid that pressure, especially in a country like India, where cricket means so much to people. For me, the key was to focus on the team environment and not get too caught up in outside noise.” From self-doubt to redemption, Abhishek’s campaign became a lesson in backing one’s strengths under pressure.
