As Royal Challengers Bengaluru prepare to kick off their IPL 2026 title defence, the spotlight firmly returns to Virat Kohli — a name synonymous with the franchise’s identity. Across 267 IPL appearances, Kohli has not only built a legacy but also established himself as the tournament’s highest run-scorer. From leading the side to delivering match-winning knocks, he remains RCB’s most dependable figure heading into another crucial season.

Despite his staggering achievements, Kohli’s drive to evolve continues to stand out. Former RCB captain Anil Kumble believes that elite players like him are never fully satisfied, constantly seeking ways to refine their game. “Great players always look to improve; they are never satisfied,” Kumble said while speaking on JioHotstar.

Kumble further explained how each IPL season presents a fresh opportunity for self-assessment and growth. “Every season, you want to make corrections — not just for the team but also for your own growth and to challenge yourself,” he added, hinting at Kohli’s mindset ahead of IPL 2026.

Interestingly, Anil Kumble also predicted a possible shift in Kohli’s batting approach this year.

“Don’t be surprised if he enters this season with a different approach, perhaps trying something like the scoop shot or the reverse scoop,” he noted, suggesting fans could see a more innovative side of the veteran batter.

Drawing comparisons, Anil Kumble pointed to AB de Villiers’ influence in modern T20 batting. “We have seen AB de Villiers do that consistently over the years, and Virat could add that to his batting repertoire as well,” he said, emphasizing Kohli’s potential to expand his shot selection.

Kumble also highlighted RCB’s improved bowling unit last season, praising spinners Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma for their consistency, alongside pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood. RCB begin their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28.
