Kolkata Knight Riders are entering IPL 2026 with a renewed sense of purpose, and newly appointed head coach Abhishek Nayar has already set the tone. During the team’s opening training session at Eden Gardens, Nayar described the late inclusion of Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani as a “blessing in disguise,” signalling optimism after a disappointing previous campaign.

Muzarabani has joined the squad as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, and Abhishek Nayar didn’t hold back in welcoming him. “Blessing, you are a blessing in disguise for us,” he said, addressing the squad in his first interaction as head coach. The 42-year-old, who has shared a long association with Gautam Gambhir during his time with KKR, now takes charge at a crucial phase for the franchise.

Nayar’s elevation comes after KKR parted ways with Chandrakant Pandit following an underwhelming eighth-place finish last season. Interestingly, Nayar also recently coached UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League, though the team endured a tough season, finishing at the bottom of the table.

Adding a light-hearted touch, Abhishek Nayar joked about Blessing Muzarabani’s towering presence. “It’s great to have you, the tallest member ever of this KKR team. Welcome, I hope you enjoy your time with the company of our boys,” he said, instantly easing the pacer into the group.

Muzarabani arrives with impressive credentials, having picked up 13 wickets in the T20 World Cup, including a match-winning spell against Australia. With over 200 international wickets to his name, he brings valuable experience despite not yet making his IPL debut. He was previously part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru as a replacement player in 2025.

KKR had initially signed Mustafizur as a backup for Matheesha Pathirana, but unforeseen circumstances led to a reshuffle. Now, with Muzarabani in the mix, KKR will hope this unexpected change proves to be a turning point in their quest for a fourth IPL title.
