A fresh update has emerged around Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as India’s chief selector, with a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official dismissing recent reports that he has sought an extension ahead of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. According to sources within the board, Agarkar — who took charge as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in 2023 — is currently contracted until September 2026. Any decision regarding his continuation beyond that period will be taken jointly by him and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, closer to the end of his tenure.

“The selection panel is a sub-committee of the BCCI, and the selectors’ contract runs till September this year,” a senior BCCI official clarified. “Ajit’s contract ends in September, and after that, the BCCI secretary and Ajit will decide whether he continues till the next ODI World Cup.”
The official further explained that under the BCCI constitution, a selector can serve up to four years without requiring a formal extension, effectively putting to rest speculation around Agarkar’s immediate future.

Since taking over in July 2023, Agarkar has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s squads during a period of transition. With stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping away from certain formats, the selection committee has overseen a generational shift while maintaining strong results across formats.

Under his leadership, India reached the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 with an unbeaten run until the summit clash. The team has since enjoyed remarkable success, clinching T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026, the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, and multiple Asia Cup triumphs.
Looking ahead, preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027 are already underway. Reports suggest that a core group of around 20 probables has been identified, with selectors closely monitoring their performances during IPL 2026. Each selector is expected to track matches regularly, ensuring consistent evaluation of players across venues.

Importantly, the focus remains on established contenders rather than emerging IPL stars. With a packed global calendar — including the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympics — the emphasis is on building a stable core for the 50-over format, rather than reacting to short-term performances.
