Kolkata Knight Riders are actively reshaping their squad ahead of IPL 2026 after a string of injury setbacks, with reports suggesting that Vidarbha pacer Saurabh Dubey has been brought in as a replacement for Akash Deep. According to Cricbuzz, the 28-year-old left-arm seamer has already joined the KKR camp at Eden Gardens, signalling the franchise’s intent to plug gaps quickly before the season begins.

Akash Deep has been ruled out after suffering a serious lower-back stress injury and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Early indications suggest he could be sidelined for nearly three months, effectively ruling him out of the entire IPL season and India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan in June.

Dubey, though relatively inexperienced, offers a different dynamic with his left-arm pace and ability to swing the new ball. His domestic record includes eight List-A matches with 16 wickets, while he has featured in just three T20 games so far. Despite going unsold in the IPL 2026 auction, KKR have identified him as a potential backup option amid their growing injury concerns.

The franchise has already been forced into multiple changes. Mustafizur Rahman, who was signed for ₹9 crore, is unavailable due to a BCCI directive, prompting KKR to rope in Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani earlier. Additionally, the team is yet to confirm a replacement for Harshit Rana, one of their key Indian fast bowlers, who is also sidelined.

Further complicating matters, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana is expected to miss the opening phase of the tournament due to injury. Despite these setbacks, KKR’s think tank remains optimistic about their bowling depth. Mentor Dwayne Bravo recently emphasised the importance of adapting to such challenges while backing the available Indian talent pool.

“In any tournament, losing key bowlers is not something you plan for, but you have to accept it,” Bravo said.

He also highlighted emerging options like Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi, and Vaibhav Arora as capable replacements who can step up when given the opportunity. As KKR prepare for IPL 2026, their ability to manage injuries and maximise squad depth could define their campaign.
